Position Overview

This role focuses on troubleshooting and resolving complex electrical and electronic issues onboard vessels, particularly in cranes, engine control systems, and other critical shipboard systems. Based in Lae, Papua New Guinea, the candidate must be available to travel and be deployed to vessels when required to address urgent technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Troubleshooting and Support:
    Respond to vessels experiencing critical electrical or electronic issues, providing hands-on troubleshooting and repair services. Analyze and resolve faults in shipboard systems, including cranes, engine controls, automation, and power distribution. Use advanced diagnostic tools to identify issues in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), sensors, and other electronic control systems.
  • Maintenance and Repair of Critical Systems:
    Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic components of shipboard cranes, including motors, power systems, and control panels. Troubleshoot and repair engine control systems, including electronic governors, alarm panels, and automation circuits. Ensure proper calibration and functioning of monitoring devices such as pressure sensors, temperature gauges, and load monitors.
  • Shore-Based Support:
    Provide remote technical guidance to onboard teams for troubleshooting electrical and electronic problems.
    Liaise with the Chief Engineer and vessel management teams to develop strategies for system upgrades and long-term solutions.
  • Deployment and On-Site Services:
    Travel to vessels as required to provide emergency technical support, often under time-sensitive conditions.
    Coordinate with ship crews and shipyards during planned maintenance or repairs to ensure smooth execution of work.
  • Preventive Maintenance Planning:
    Assist in developing preventive maintenance schedules for electrical and electronic systems to minimize downtime.
    Conduct periodic inspections of vessels to identify potential issues before they escalate.
  • Compliance and Safety:
    Ensure that repairs and maintenance activities comply with international maritime regulations and classification society standards. Promote adherence to safety protocols when working on high-voltage systems and critical shipboard equipment.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    Maintain detailed records of all troubleshooting, repairs, and inspections performed during deployments.
    Prepare technical reports and recommendations for system upgrades or replacements.Qualifications
  • Education and Certification:
    Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical, Electronic, or Marine Engineering. STCW-compliant certification as an Electro-Technical Officer is preferred but not mandatory for shore-based roles.
  • Technical Expertise:
    In-depth knowledge of shipboard electrical systems, including power generation, distribution, and control systems.
    Proficiency in troubleshooting cranes, engine control systems, PLCs, and automation technology.
  • Experience:
    At least 5 years of experience as an ETO, preferably on multi-purpose vessels with advanced crane and engine control systems. Demonstrated experience with hands-on troubleshooting and repairs in time-critical situations.
  • Soft Skills:
    Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to work independently under pressure.
    Excellent communication skills for coordinating with ship crews and shore-based teams.
    Flexibility and willingness to travel on short notice.
